CASTLEWOOD, Alameda County — People living near Castlewood have access to public hiking, bicycling and horseback-riding trails at nearby Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.
The East Bay Regional Park District lists November through February hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and says regular parking is free. The Foothill staging-area entrance is reached from the direction of Castlewood Drive via Foothill Road.
Private club land is not public parkland
The Castlewood Country Club and its golf facilities are separate from the public regional park. A map showing the club alongside open space does not give hikers permission to cross private property or use its facilities. Enter the park through designated public trailheads and follow posted boundaries.
How difficult are the trails?
The Park District describes multiuse dirt trails that traverse canyon and ridge terrain, with some elevations above 1,600 feet. Conditions can be steep, exposed and affected by rain. Visitors should bring enough water, review trail maps and plan their return before the gates close.
The public park supports walking, cycling and horseback riding under specific trail rules. Dogs may be allowed subject to park restrictions, particularly near grazing animals or developed areas. Check current park closures and safety notices before visiting.
For current information, the district lists 888-327-2757 with additional menu options for the park.
